History of Newton Abbot & District Branch REA
Initial Formation occurred on 27th February 2003 at the Newton Abbot Royal British Legion Club where we held our first meeting. There were 13 ex-Sappers present and we discussed what we wanted to do and how we were going to go about it.
On 27th March 2003 we held our second meeting and decided that we wanted to form a Branch that would fill the gap in the Devon area. Many potential members had expressed their desire to have a Branch that was easier to get to and more within their locale. To this end we remained 'informal' and concentrated on building our membership up.
About Newton Abbot
Newton Abbot is an old Market Town that is the Administrative Centre of the District of Teignbridge in the County of Devon. Situated on the tidal River Teign we are nicely located as a through route to most other neighbouring Towns and Cities. Newton Abbot is surrounded by many other hamlets, villages and towns. Our Town also serves as an ideal 'base' for Horse-Racing enthusiasts, CAMRA followers, seaside travellers and hill walkers... we are the gateway to Dartmoor! and ideal location for "Moor to Sea"
We normally meet every fourth Sunday of the month at
The Royal British Legion Club
2 Marsh Rd, Newton Abbot
Next Meeting Sunday 23 August 2020 at 11:30
Keep safe people
By mid-2003 we had built up our membership, formed a Committee and decided that we would like to become an 'Official Branch' of the Royal Engineers Association. Our intention is to remain very 'informal' with the minimum required 'formality' at our meetings. It was felt that it was more important to get the Sapper Community together in a relaxed atmosphere.
Oct - Dec 2003: All of the ground work has been completed, (with a few hurdles on the way), to becoming fully integrated within the REA Network. Our Branch has been officially recognised and this was 'rubber-stamped' at the REA Management Meeting in early 2004. Our home base remains The Newton Abbot Royal British Legion Club.
